It is important that you consider making a will.  Making a will ensures that, when you die, your property and other possessions go to the people that you choose.

1:  Before contacting Thomas J O'Halloran Solicitors about making your will your should do a list of your assets and their location. It is important to tell your solicitor if any assets are located outside of Ireland. 

2: Details of your family and the names and addresses of the beneficiaries in your will.  

3.  If you have children under 18 then you should appoint guardians for your children. You can appoint one or more guardians. It is important to inform your guardians that you have chosen them and that they agree to act as a guardian for your children.  

4.  Gifts in a will are subject to Capital Acquisitions Tax (CAT). Depending on the person who is receiving the gift there are different tax free thresholds that apply. These thresholds are affecting by any gifts that you give a person during your lifetime and will reduce the threshold the person can receive in your will. The thresholds that apply can often change and please speak to us and we can advise you on what applies when you are making your will.
